この金曜日、公務員時代の先輩と会食しました。
先輩は4年前に、25年間勤めた公務員を辞め、実家のある下呂（岐阜県）に戻り、農園経営をしています。ブルーベリー狩りができる農園です。珍しくないですか？
公務員を辞めてすぐ今の形になったわけではありません。畑は元々トマトを作っていたそうで、下呂の土地柄がブルーベリーに適していることを発見して以来、ゼロからのブルーベリー栽培がスタートしたわけです。相当な試行錯誤があったはずです。本当に、地道かつ周到にやるべきことをコツコツ愚直に進めてこられたようです。 ブルーベリー狩りができる農園は、その甲斐あって一昨年にオープンしました。
先輩のチャレンジは、これだけで終わりません。
岐阜県に本社のある大手スーパーとの提携、また地元の「道の駅」やJAとの提携、インターネットでの青果やブルーベリーの苗の販売など、既に着々と事業を拡げています。もうすぐ加工品であるブルーベリージャムの販売もスタートするそうです。農園そのものも、より広く大きくして、より多くの方に喜んでもらえるようにしたいそうです。
この不況期にあって、農園は小さいながらも右肩上がりだと話してました。ただ、けっして拡大させることを経営目的としているわけでなく、常に、「身の丈」であること、なので、バブリーな戦略はとらないこと、「答えはお客様の声の中にある」こと、を肝に銘じているとも。
公務員の頃からお役人的な「上から目線」でものを言う人ではありませんでしたが、消費者の方と直接接するようになってからは、さらに腰を低くして、お客様の生の声を大切にするようになったと話してました。お客様の有難味を痛感している、と。気さくながらも生真面目な先輩が、殊、自身の農園経営のこととなると、饒舌に熱っぽく語る姿が大変印象的でした。何度も繰り返された「身の丈」には、僕も学ばされました。
先輩が育てるブルーベリーは、もちろん無農薬です。最近、『奇跡のリンゴ』が話題になっていますが、無農薬で果物を育てる大変さは、実際にやった人にしかわからないでしょう。安心して美味しく食べられて、しかもカラダに良いなんて、最高じゃないですか？かくいう僕もまだブルーベリー狩りは未体験です。今年のシーズン（6月下旬頃～9月中旬頃）が始まったら、自分で摘み取ったブルーベリーを口にしてみたいと思っています。ついでに、下呂温泉にでも浸かってこようかな。
それにしても、先輩の農園のホームページを見ていて、ブルーベリーにこれほど多くの種類があるとは思いませんでした。大きくは、「ハイブッシュ系統」と「ラビットアイ系統」という2つに分かれるようですが、僕のお気に入りは、ラビットアイ系統の中にある、「デライト」
